How to Use Reusable Mop Pads (Swiffer Covers): The Complete Guide

How to Use Reusable Mop Pads (Swiffer Covers): The Complete Guide

If you love the convenience of a Swiffer style mop but hate constantly buying (and throwing away) disposable pads… reusable mop pads are your new best friend!!

They work the same way as disposable mop pads except you can wash and reuse them again and again. Same quick clean, way less waste. Here’s exactly how to use them.

What you’ll need

  • A Swiffer-style flat mop (or similar)

  • Reusable mop pads

  • Floor cleaner (homemade or store-bought)

  • Optional: spray bottle or a container for pre-soaked pads

Step 1: Attach the pad

Slide the mop pad over the mop head like a cover. Depending on your mop style, you may need to tuck the corners to keep it snug and secure.

Step 2: Choose your cleaning method (2 easy options)

Option A: Pre-soak your mop pads (wet Swiffer-style)

If you like your mop pads to be ready to go and already wet, you can store them pre-soaked.

Here’s how:

  • Put your reusable mop pads into a Tupperware/container with a lid

  • Pour in your floor cleaner

  • Seal it and store until ready to use

When it’s time to clean, just pull one out and mop like normal. (If it’s too saturated, give it a quick wring-out first.)

Option B: Spray as you go (my personal favorite)

This is the method I use most often. I keep a spray bottle filled with my favorite floor cleaner from my local refillery and spray the floor as I go.

How to do it:

  • Attach a dry mop pad

  • Spray a small section of the floor

  • Mop that section, repeat

This method gives you the most control and makes it easy to target sticky spots without over-saturating your floors.

Pro tip: dry pass first (especially with pets!)

If you have pets, kids, or just a lot of crumbs, do a quick dry pass first to pick up hair and dust, then switch to a fresh pad for wet mopping.

After cleaning: just toss it in the wash

When you’re done, remove the pad and throw it into the laundry.

Washing tips:

  • Cold or warm wash

  • Regular detergent

  • Skip fabric softener (it can reduce absorbency)

  • Air dry or tumble dry low

Reusable mop pads are one of the easiest “lazy girl” sustainable swaps because they keep your cleaning routine quick, convenient, and low-waste!!!
